Select Revit Elements for a Dynamo Script

When using Dynamo Player to run a Dynamo script on a Revit model, you may need to select elements from the model for use in the script.

If you have trouble selecting model elements as described in Provide Input for a Script from Dynamo Player, consider the following points:

• Click Select first. To select Revit elements as input for a script, in Dynamo Player, first press Select in the script's Inputs dialog. Then click in the Revit window, and select the desired elements.

  If you select Revit elements before clicking Select in Dynamo Player, Dynamo Player ignores the current Revit selections.

  If you need to cancel out of selection mode in Revit, press ESC.

• Let Dynamo do the filtering. Dynamo can be a powerful tool for simplifying workflows in Revit.

  For example, when a Dynamo script uses the Select Multiple Elements node, you don't need to filter the selection in Revit. Instead, simply click and drag in Revit to box-select a set of any visible elements. Then run the script in Dynamo Player. Dynamo automatically filters the selection set to include only the elements needed by the script.

• Complete the selection in Revit. Some types of selection require that you perform an additional action (such as clicking Finish) to complete the selection.

  For example, for the Select Model Element node, you simply select an element in the model. For the Select Faces node, however, you select multiple faces and then click Finish to complete the selection.

• Check the Revit status bar for hints. If a selection is not working as expected, check for a prompt in the status bar at the lower left of the Revit window. Also check the name of the selection node displayed in Dynamo Player. Dynamo Player supports several Dynamo nodes for selecting elements interactively in Revit. Different nodes may require different selection behaviors.
