Butt Weld Calculator dialog box - Fatigue Calculation tab

Calculates fatigue loaded weld joints where static calculation is not sufficient. Tip: A description of fatigue loaded joints and basic information are presented in the Fatigue Strength of Weld Joint topic of the Engineer's Handbook.

Ribbon: Environments tab Convert panel Butt Weld Calculator , and then click the Fatigue Calculation tab

Loads

Enter the loading parameters.

Endurance Limit Determination

Set the parameters. See the Weld Joint Endurance Limit Determination chapter in Engineer's Handbook for more information.

Basic Endurance Limit of Material

Use the estimated value (predefined by the calculator), or enter a value according to the results of the material tests.

Surface Factor

Implies that the fatigue strength is growing in relation to the increasing quality. Click the arrow to set the value in the Surface Factor dialog box.

Size Factor

The value is lower than 1 for joints loaded with reversed bend or torsion (shear). If the joint is loaded with reversed tension, its value has no effect on the fatigue strength.

Reliability Factor

Displays a calculated value. The value decreases in relation to the growth of the reliability requirement.

Modified Factor of Stress Concentration

Displays a reciprocal value to the Fatigue-Strength Reduction Factor.

Operating Temperature Factor

Depends on the used material. The endurance limit of the commonly used structural steels working in the approximate range between -20 and 200°C can be set as 1 (it does not depend much on the temperature).

Factor of Miscellaneous Effects

Includes all other effects that can reduce or increase the fatigue strength of the weld joint (for example the influence of corrosion).

Calculation Parameters

Sets the parameters for calculation process.

Dynamic Stroke Factor

Specifies you enter or values you select in the Recommended values of dynamic stroke factor dialog box.

Life in Thousands of Deflections

Specifies a value you select from the list. Instructions for selection can be found in the Endurance Limit in the Scope of Timed Strength chapter of the Engineer's Handbook.

Required Safety Degree

Sets the ratio of fatigue strength and the calculated stress of the weld joint. Enter the value, or click the arrow to select the value in the Safety Factor of Fatigue-Loaded Weld Joint dialog box.

Results

Displays the calculated values and the joint strength check.

Summary of Messages area

Displays the reports about calculation. To open the Summary of Messages area at the bottom of the tab, double-click the double line at the bottom of the tabs or click the chevron.

Calculation of Fatigue Loaded Weld According to the CSN Standard

The Fatigue Calculation tab changes if calculation according to CSN is applied. Select the Calculation according to CSN option in More Options of the Calculation tab.

The section of the Check of Basic Material replaces the Endurance Limit Determination. It contains parameters needed within the calculation for checking the strength in a part of weldment not affected by the weld.

The section of Calculation Parameters contains some additional parameters.

Note: Calculation of fatigue loaded welds according to CSN is only determined for the 11 class steels with strength 370, 420 and 520 MPa.
