To Create a Family Copy in a Content Center User Library

Use the Save Copy As command to save an existing family as a new family in a read/write library. The family created by Save Copy As command appears separate from the parent family in a merged view of the content.

  1. Click Manage tab Content Center panel Editor to open the Content Center Editor dialog box.
  2. Find the family to copy.
  3. Right-click the family and select Save Copy As.
  4. In the Save Copy As dialog box, set the options:
    • Select a read/write library to save the copied family to.
    • Choose Independent Family or Link to Parent Family.

A family with a link to the parent family receives updates when the parent family changes. Parameter Mapping cannot be edited for a family with a link. If you change the template file, your template file is overwritten on family update.

A family without link to the parent family is considered a new family in the Content Center library. It is treated as a family manually published to Content Center.

    • Edit Family Name and Family Description.
    • Edit the name of the folder, where the family member parts are saved when placed in an assembly.
  5. If needed, click Review to display the Review dialog box. Review the family table (only the first three rows display), and click OK.

To edit the File Name or Part Number expression, in the Review dialog box, click the File Name or Part Number field in the first row. Then make the edits in the Expression field. To insert a family parameter in the expression, click , and double-click a parameter on the list. When finished, click Apply, and then OK.

  6. Click OK in the Save Family Copy As dialog box to start the copying process.

Link to Parent and Synchronization of the Copied Family

You can break the link between the copied family and the parent family. Right-click a copied family with link, and select Break Link. After the link is broken, the family becomes independent and do not receive updates from the parent.

You can suppress the link between the copied family and the parent family. Right-click a copied family with link, and select Suppress Link. When the link is suppressed, the family synchronization with the parent is deferred. You can unsuppress the link and synchronize the family later.
