Retopology Tools

Retopology tools in Maya let you create new topology based on the features of a reference surface or optimize your topology geometry manually. Maya's retopology toolset offers a streamlined, multi-option workflow that lets modelers focus on the creative process instead of edge flow and polygon count.

Use Retopology Tools to accomplish the following:

• Manually create or retopologize a mesh using Quad Draw: The Quad Draw tool gives you complete control over the retopology process, providing you with tools to quickly create new topology and refine it on-the-fly. The Quad Draw tool lets you create new meshes that are constrained to another object or plane. You can use Quad Draw to create polygons, create polygon strips, manually add quads/ edge loops and fill holes.
• Automatically retopologize a mesh: Select Mesh > Retopologize to open up the Retopologize Options window. If you have a mesh that's shaped to your liking but has bad topology (uneven faces, n-gons, etc), you can use the Remesh and Retopologize commands to fix the entire mesh and avoid painstaking manual modeling labor. Use this method when you want to uniformly retopologize an entire mesh at once.
