To Edit Layout Profiles Using Grips

Use editing grips to relocate or modify curves and straights using visual design cues. If you created profile elements using the constraint-based tools, some editing grips are not available. For example, if you attach a floating curve to a fixed or floating straight, the editing grip is not available for editing the VIP of the two elements.

Tutorial Exercise: Editing a Layout Profile

  1. Click a profile object in a profile view. If the profile type is static, editing grips appear on the straights and vertical curves. Grip behavior depends on the type of grip:

    Grip Type

    Behavior

    at vertical intersection point (VIP)

Moves the VIP, changing gradients and lengths of adjacent straights.

    Preserves curve length and radius.

Use with ORTHO mode turned on to move VIP horizontally or vertically.

    at end of straight

Adjusts the straight length while preserving the gradient. Modifies the gradient of adjacent straight.

    Preserves curve length and radius.

    at end of straight

Adjusts the straight length and gradient simultaneously. Modifies the gradient of adjacent straight.

    at straight midpoint

Moves the entire straight, without changing the length or gradient.

Changes the location of adjacent VIPs and the gradient of adjacent straights.

Preserves the radius and length of adjacent curves.

    at curve endpoint

Moves the endpoint along the straight, without affecting the straight gradients or VIP location.

Changes position of both curve endpoints so that midpoint remains near VIP.

Changes the curve length and radius.

    at curve midpoint

Moves a pass-through point for the curve, changing the curve length, radius, and position of both endpoints as required.

    VIP location is not affected.

After the curve is edited, this grip moves to the new midpoint.

  2. Identify the grip you want to move, then click it once. The grip changes color from cyan to red.
  3. Drag the grip to its new location, and click to place it there. The grip follows your mouse pointer, within the constraints imposed by the grip type.
Note: When a grip is selected, you can use either dynamic input or the Profile Entities vista or Profile Layout Parameters dialog box to enter precise attribute values for the grip.
