Video: Create a View Filter Using AND Conditions

Use the AND condition in a view filter when all of the rules must evaluate as true.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Create a rule-based view filter, and select a category.
  2. Create a rule set using the AND condition.
  3. Add rules to the AND rule set.
  4. Add the view filter to a view, and specify visibility overrides for identified elements.
  5. See the results.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2019. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

View filters are a powerful way to control the visibility of elements using values assigned to parameters of the elements. For example, if you want to find and highlight all walls that have a fire rating of 2 hours and are structural shear walls, use a view filter.

Open the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog for the view, and click the Filters tab. Before we can add a filter to the view, we need to create the filter. Click Edit/New.

Click the New icon in the lower left corner of the dialog to create a new rule-based filter. Provide a name for the filter, and click OK. Now select the category of element. You can select multiple categories, but you will only be able to filter on parameters that are common to both categories. In this case, we are only filtering for walls.

Now define the rules. Both AND and OR operators can be used when creating a filter. In this example, we need the AND function. When making an AND filter, all of the rules must be true.

Each rule consists of a parameter, an operator, and a value. For this rule, the parameter is Fire Rating, the operator is Equals, and the value is 2-hr. To add an additional rule, click Add Rule. Set this rule to Structural Usage, equals, shear. Add more rules to the filter as needed. To remove an un-needed rule, click the Remove Rule icon next to the rule. When finished defining rules, click OK.

Now add the filter to the view, and set the overrides. Click Add, select the filter you just created, and click OK. These overrides affect the visibility of elements that match the filter. Here we will change the cut pattern of matching elements to be solid red. Click OK to exit the dialog and apply the filter to the view.

In this example, the filter was applied to all 3 walls meeting the requirements of 2-hour rated and structural shear walls. The walls that are only 2-hour rated did not meet all conditions of the rule, so they are not affected.

Use AND rules in filters to find and highlight elements sharing common parameter values.
