Planning a network domain change

Topics in this section

Considering a network domain change?

Certain network changes can impact the stability of Desktop Connector and should be approached with caution and planning. Prior to renaming the network domain, users of Desktop Connector should be given opportunity to complete any currently running Desktop Connector job activity so that the local files are sync'd to the cloud prior to the domain name change. Any unsyn'd files in the local cache will need to be manually added to the new local cache location after the domain name change. Properly planning the activities following a domain change will ensure Desktop Connector continues to function as expected.

How to plan for a network domain change

Events like changing the network domain name will impact Desktop Connector and will require steps to restore normal Desktop Connector behavior. After a domain name change event, users on that domain will have their Desktop Connector disconnected from the local cache. This will break Desktop Connectors ability to function. The local cache location prior to the domain name change will no longer be able to be used by Desktop Connector. The steps below are a reference for how to plan for and react to a domain name change.

Note: these steps do not require uninstalling Desktop Connector.

After the domain name change event, all Desktop Connector user machines will require the following:

  1. Rename the C:\Users\username\DC\ACCDocs\ folder to something like C:\Users\<username>\DC\ACCDocs_backup\ to create a backup version of the local cache in case any files were not sync'd to the cloud prior to the domain name change
  2. Delete registry keys for all users that starts with DesktopConnector from the following registry location: 'Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SyncRootManager'
  3. All projects will need to be reselected using the "Select Projects" command from the Home Screen
Note: Any local changes that had not sync'd to the cloud prior to the domain name change can be manually uploaded from the backup location to the new local cache location (C:\Users\username\DC\ACCDocs) so those local changes are not lost.
