Sending Maya blendshapes to Mudbox

You can send multiple blendshape nodes created in Maya to Mudbox. When sending blendshapes, the following behavior occurs:
See the table below for specific examples of how blendshapes are sent from Maya to Mudbox:
Sent from Maya... Imported into Mudbox...

A single blendshape node with targets

Each target is imported as a sculpt layer

A single blendshape node with a target group that contains targets

A sculpt layer group with sculpt layers for each target

Multiple blendshape nodes with targets for each blend shape
Tip: When working with multiple blendshape nodes, you can organize your targets in target groups, so they remain separate when that are imported into Mudbox. Otherwise, all targets are merged together.

Each target is imported as a sculpt layer

You can edit the imported blendshape nodes in Mudbox and merge back to the Maya scene without losing the modifications. This interoperability helps you to perform finer sculpting on the imported blendshapes in Mudbox and then merge them back to Maya.

For example, to merge back blendshape modifications to a Maya scene

  1. Create multiple blendshapes in Maya.
  2. Send the Maya scene with multiple blendshapes to Mudbox using the File > Send to Mudbox options.
Perform modifications on the imported blendshapes (scuplt layers in Mudbox).
Important: You must house your sculpt layers in sculpt layer groups in order for Maya to recognize your changes and translate them to blendshape targets.
  3. Update the Maya scene.

The blendshape targets or meshes in the corresponding Maya scene are updated correctly with the modifications.
