Using Vault with Revit

The workflow for using the Revit Vault add-in is easy and straightforward. The following list is an overview of the Revit Vault add-in best practice workflow.

Revit Vault Add-in Setup

  1. Before installing Vault and the Revit Vault add-in, determine the installation setup best suited for your company. Installing Vault on a system that is too small can limit functionality or require reconfiguration in the future.
  2. Configure Autodesk Vault server behavior using the Autodesk Data Management Server console. The administrator must create a user account for each person who needs access to the vault. A user account consists of a login name and password. Refer to the help in the server console for more information.
  3. Install Revit and the Vault Client on the client workstation.
  4. Note: Refer to the Vault Installation Guide for more information on installing and configuring your environment for Vault.

General Workflow for Shared Project Files

Follow these steps to work with a shared project file.

  1. In Revit, log into Vault using the Log In command on the Vault ribbon tab.
  2. Open or create a local copy of the project file.
  3. Perform one of the following steps:
    • Synchronize with Central.

A copy of the synchronized file is automatically added to your Vault.

    • Select Save to Vault on the Vault Ribbon.

A new file version is added to the Vault without synchronizing with the Revit Server.

    • Note: You may be prompted to select a folder location within Vault. This prompt can be hidden by configuring the Share Path property in Vault.

General Workflow for Non-shared Project Files

Follow these steps to work with a non-shared project file.

  1. Open a project file with Revit or click Open from Vault on the Vault ribbon.
Note: Open from Vault automatically checks the file out of the vault.
  2. Make your changes to the file.
  3. Select Save to Vault on the Vault Ribbon.

If this is the first time the file is being saved to the Vault, it is added to the Vault as a new file and checked in. If the file already exists in the vault, the file is checked back into the Vault as a new version.
