About Transferring Custom User Interface Elements with the Customize User Interface (CUI) Editor

The Transfer tab of the Customize User Interface (CUI) Editor can be used to transfer a copy of the user interface elements between two customization (CUIx) files.

Note: All user interface elements can be transferred between two CUIx files with the exception of the property settings defined under the Quick Properties and Rollover Tooltips nodes.

If you transfer a user interface element that references other user interface elements, such as a flyout or ribbon panel, all referenced user interface elements are also transferred. For example, if you transfer the Home - 2D ribbon tab, which references a number of ribbon panels, the referenced ribbon panels are transferred along with the ribbon tab if they don’t already exist in the CUIx file.

Transferred button images will not be transferred in some circumstances. Button images are not transferred in the following circumstances:

  • Images loaded from individual image files; those image files must reside in the location specified by the Custom Icon Location node on the Files tab in the Options dialog box.
  • Images stored in a third-party resource DLL; the name of the resource DLL must match the name of the customization file.

Handling Legacy Customization and Menu Files

User interface elements can also be transferred from legacy customization (CUI) or legacy menu (MNS, MNU) files. When a CUI, MNS, or MNU file is opened in the CUI Editor, a new CUIx file is created with the same name as the original source customization or menu file; the original source file is not modified. The new CUIx file is then loaded in the CUI Editor and becomes the source file to which user interface elements can be transferred.
