Issue Permissions

Issue permissions affect how certain members can interact with issues on your project and determine the actions that are available to them.

By default, the Issues tool has permissions by role. For any project members who do not have a role, they automatically have the lowest permission, "View, edit, and assign issues for their company or those in their company". Project administrators can manage permission levels in the settings of the Issues tool. Permissions can be assigned to individual team members or applied to them through their roles or companies.

Users can always view issues they are a watcher on or that are assigned to them. To learn more about watchers, see Issue Watchers.

Assign and Change Issue Permission Levels

By default, the permissions table in Issues provides members with permissions according to their assigned roles. Click the caret next to the role to see the members in that role. If there is no caret, no members in the project are currently assigned to that role.

Note:

Only project administrators can have Administrator permission in the Issues tool. Project administrator permissions must be assigned through the Project Admin service.

To assign someone a permission level in Issues, first add them to the Issues tool. Then, follow these steps:

  1. In the top right corner the Issues Log, click Settings > Permissions.

  2. Click Add permissions.

  3. Select one or multiple project members, roles, or companies and assign them a permission level, and click Add.

Note: If a user is granted a higher-level permission, it will override any lower permission they may have through their role or company. For example, a project member is in the role "Architect". The "Architect" role has "View, edit, and assign" permissions. You can add them individually and provide them with the higher "Manage issues" permission. They will gain the higher "Manage issues" permissions, despite of their role.

If you'd like to change the permission level for a member, role, or a company, find their role in the permission log and use the permission selection tool.

Note: In Project Admin, Issue permissions for members are displayed in the Members tool. However, permissions can only be changed in issue settings. There is a link to the issues settings when viewing a member's assigned products and permissions.

Issue Permission Levels

Here is a quick summary of how the four permission levels can be used:

  • Edit, view, and assign: Ideal for subcontractors. This permission level is split into two sub-levels that control member's ability to assign issues to other companies. Members with this permission can either:

    • View, edit, and assign issues to their company or those in their company: The lowest permission level that is by default assigned to all users unless they were assigned to a higher tier. This permission level is ideal for subcontractors who are assigned issues by others and do not need to assign members from other companies.

    or

    • View and edit issues for their company, and assign issues to anyone: This permission level is intended for subcontractors that are expected to hand over issues to other stakeholders in a project.
  • Full visibility: Ideal for architects and owners. Members with this permission level can view, assign, and edit all published issues.

  • Manage issues: Ideal for administrators who will have access to edit any field in any issue, delete, publish/unpublish, and perform other actions that are restricted to most users.

  • Administrator: Full administrative privileges to control issue settings. Administrators can control permissions of other users, create and edit issue types, templates, custom fields, root causes, and statuses. This tier is reserved to project administrators and can't be edited from the issue settings.

Tip: Click an expand icon to next to the desired permission level to view the actions available to members with that permission.

View, Edit, and Assign

Members can view and edit issues for their company. They can assign issues to their company or those in their company.

Known limitations

Maintaining issue visibility

When an issue is originally assigned to a company and a member of that company with View, edit, and assign issues to their company or those in their company permission level reassigns this issue to another person, that reassigning member is automatically added as a watcher to prevent losing the ability to track this issue.

Note: Due to technical limitations, the feature may not always work as expected on mobile.
