Creating Groups of Segments

You can create custom groups of timeline segments in the Timeline and Effects tab. The groups are persisted at the Sequence level.

To create a group of segments:

  1. Select one or more segments on the Timeline, or from Effects tab, in the Storyboard View or the Storyboard Reel.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • In the Effects environment, you have two options:
      • Right-click a segment and select Create Group.
      • Click + () next to the Manage Groups button.
    • In the Timeline environment: Right-click a segment and select Groups Create Group.
    • Define and use the Create a Group keyboard shortcut (defined in Application menu Keyboard Shortcuts.)
  3. Once the group is created, you name it.

    The group is now available in the Select Group menu.

To add a segment to a group:

  1. Right-click the segment and select Add to Group .

Reordering Segments in a Group

You can reorder the segments in a group when in the Effects tab.

This custom ordering applies only to the group: modifications are not propagated to the sequence. The custom order persists as long as the group exists.

To create a custom order:

  1. In the Effects tab, select a group from Select Group.

  2. Enable Filter.

    This filters out from the Storyboard Reel and Storyboard View the segments that are not part of the selected group. It also displays the Custom Order button.

  3. Enable Custom Order.

    You can now you can grab a clip on the Storyboard Reel or View and move it to a different position. Notice how if you disable Custom Order or Filter, the segments are back in their original order.

Managing Groups

You manage groups using the Manage Groups window.

To manage groups, open the Manage Groups window:

  • Right-click a segment and select Manage Group (Effects) or Groups Manage Groups (Timeline).
  • (Effects tab only) Click the Groups Manager button ().

From the Manage Group window you can:

  • Rename the group.
  • Expand a group to display the segments it contains.
  • View tracks where each segment is located.
  • View only the groups with at least one segment on the current Storyboard. Enable Current Storyboard Only. Segments appear dark if they are part of the group but cannot be displayed because they are on a different track.
  • Move segments between groups.

To move a segment between two groups:

  1. Open the Manage Groups window.

  2. Expand the group containing the segment.

  3. Drag & drop the segment from one group to another.

    Tip: Using the context menu, you can also cut & paste segments between groups.
Tip: Automatically manage all connected sequences in the same Reel Group be selecting Preferences Tools / TL FX Effects Storyboard Connected Conform Groups. You can also enable this option when creating a Connected Source Segment: Harmonise Groups across Sequencesin the Create Source Segment Connection dialog.

Search and Groups

You can use a Segment Group as a criteria in a Timeline Search. This allows you to search only for segments part of a specific group.
