About the Controls tab

The Controls tab displays two things: the constraints applied to the activity, and priority you assigned it. Use the Controls tab to add and remove constraints, and to assign or remove a priority value to the task.

Activity overview

The Activity overview appears at the top of each Activity panel, and summarizes the selected activity.

Activity type and name

The name of the activity.

Warnings and errors

The errors ( ) and warnings ( ) icons only appear when infeasible constraints are applied to the activity itself or to one of its children.

appears when at least one of the children of the selected activity has an infeasible constraint.

appears when the selected activity has an infeasible constraint.

Activity path

The ancestry of the activity.

Activity time frame

The Activity time frame displays when the activity starts and ends, and its duration.

Basic constraints

Use Basic constraints to add and remove constraints on the activity.

To add a constraint to an activity:

  1. Select the activity in the Gantt chart.

  2. Open the Controls tab.

  3. Click + Add a constraint and select a constraint.

  4. Select a date.

When you select a date, the constraint is applied to the activity. If you select a red date in the calendar, this creates an infeasible constraint.

To remove a constraint from an activity:

  1. Select the activity in the Gantt chart.
  2. Open the Controls tab.
  3. Click the constraint to delete.

Priority

Use Priority to describe relative importance of different parts of your schedule. Priority can be seen as a description of your preference, or as soft objective, as opposed to constraints or dependencies which are more strictly enforced.

For example, you have a schedule that contains Sequences. You would prefer that certain Sequences are worked on before others, but there is no specific time based constraints or any dependency between the Sequences. In this case, you could set these more important Sequences to have a higher priority than the others.

If there is a hard requirement that something should be done in a specific order or in a specific time frame, use create dependencies in your planning software, or add constraints in Flow Generative Scheduling.
