To Work in an Industry Model Drawing

You can create new data in any of the feature classes defined by the industry model. You do not have to connect to a data store or check out features to edit them. The industry model and all its feature classes are stored inside the DWG file itself.

To work in an industry model drawing

  1. To create new features on industry model feature layers, do the following:
    • Right-click the industry model feature layer in Display Manager.
    • Click Create.

If the feature layer supports more than one type of geometry, a fly-out menu displays your options. For example, a Poles layer might allow you to create both Point and MultiPoint features.

    • Draw the new feature in the map.
  2. To create industry model features from data in other formats, do the following:
    • Switch to the Maintenance workspace, if you are not already in it.
    • In the Industry Model explorer (on the left side of the Maintenance workspace), right-click a feature class to which you want to add the data.
    • Select Create New Feature From Geometry.

You must use the Industry Model explorer for this--the equivalent command in Display Manager will not work.

    • Draw a selection window around the features to convert and press Enter.
    • With the new features still selected, double-click the selection to add attribute information, or click Home tab > Modify panel > Attributes.

Only the geometry is added to the industry model feature class. You must enter the attribute information manually.

    • In the form that appears, click the Highlight icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the form.

The corresponding feature is highlighted in the map. Enter the information for this feature.

    • Click Next in the form and repeat the highlighting and data entry procedure for each selected feature.
  3. To share industry model drawings with others, do any of the following:
    • To share with those who use a version of AutoCAD Map 3D toolset that supports industry data models, simply send the drawing to the other person. The data model and its data will automatically be included. However, for any connections to other data stores, use eTransmit to be sure that connections will work for the other person.
    • You can also share industry model drawings with AutoCAD Civil 3D users. They will be able to display the contents of an industry model drawing with the same styling as in AutoCAD Map 3D toolset. In AutoCAD Civil 3D, however, the industry model data will be read-only.
    • To share with an AutoCAD user or someone with an older version of AutoCAD Map 3D toolset, save the drawing in AutoCAD format. Rules, relationships, and GIS functionality will be lost, but the other person will be able to see the geometry.
