Use the classification file to assign classification numbers to families. The classification numbers organize the families into groups used during the construction process or may be used to classify elements in your model in other ways.
The classification table that ships with Revit is a sample file. Edit the sample file, or replace it with one using your own classification system.
Edit the classification file
- Browse to the location of the Classification Number File. The classification file is located here:
/%userprofile%/AppData/Roaming/Autodesk/Revit/Autodesk Revit
2026
Note: The classification number file location can be opened directly from the Classification Number dialog in Revit. Click "Open" in the dialog to open the file location.
- Use a text editor to edit the file.
The classification number file is a tab delimited file. Values in the file are separated by tabs, each line of the file represents an entry in the table.
- Save the file to the original location.
Note: You may also copy and paste an edited file to this location and rename it to Classification_Taxonomy.txt.
- Close and Restart Revit.
