To import coverage areas

Import polygons representing parking areas, empty lots, parks, and so on. Coverage areas are draped on top of terrain to look three-dimensional.

  1. Follow the general import instructions.
  2. On the Data Source Configuration screen, on the Common tab, map a property from the data source to Category or specify a style for the coverage.

If you do not specify a style, the material for a coverage polygon is determined by its category attribute. For example, you can specify that all parking lots are gray, while bikeways are green. Features with unspecified categories use a default style.

To specify coverages as avoidance areas

Using InfraWorks 360 with Roadway Design, you can specify coverages as areas to avoid when automatically generating an optimized road corridor.

  1. From the Start page, click the on-off toggle next to Corridor Optimization to enable automatic optimization for your models.
  2. Import your coverage.
Note: The optimization process will only recognize imported polygons. If you want to designate a coverage area that you have already sketched in your InfraWorks model as an area to avoid, export that coverage to an IMX file and then re-import it into your model.
  3. Click .
  4. In the Data Sources panel, right-click on the coverage file and select Configure to display the Data Sources Configuration screen. Set the Type field to Coverage Areas.
  5. On the Cost tab, select Include Environmental Impact And Associated Cost For Corridor Optimization. Set the Avoidance Type to Avoid.
  6. Click Close & Refresh to apply the settings to your model.
  7. Click .
  8. In the Corridor Optimization panel, choose Advanced Settings and scroll down to Cost Zones. The coverage area is now listed as an avoidance area.

Advanced Tips

You can create surface modifications by creating 3D coverage polygons. You can draw these by hand, to apply them as breaklines to the base ground, or import 3D polyline breaklines as Coverages.

To flatten an area, see To shape terrain.
