Preparation and setup

Within an Inventor assembly, routes and runs are created from the master runs assembly template that is stored in the installation path of Autodesk Inventor Tube & Pipe. XP default: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor <version>\Design Data\Tube & Pipe. Windows 7 default: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor <version>\Design Data\Tube & Pipe.

Autodesk Inventor Tube & Pipe provides two types of units for the template: English and Metric. When you install Autodesk Inventor, your selection of default units of measurement sets the default template used to create standard Inventor assemblies and the default template used to create routes and runs. For example, if you set English (Inches) as the default unit of measurement during installation, the template in the English subdirectory is copied to the Templates directory.

A master runs assembly without any routes and runs can be used as the template when you save it in the Design Data directory. You can add your own Tube & Pipe specific settings to the master runs assembly template. For example, you can import new styles into the template so they are available for creating all the new tube and pipe assemblies.

Note: If you plan to continue with the master runs assembly templates that were created in Autodesk Inventor Professional 10 or earlier versions, you must perform the migration manually.

What custom tube and pipe settings can be added to the template?

You can add the following Tube & Pipe specific settings to the template so they are available for forward creation:

  • Custom tube and pipe styles
  • Global master runs assembly settings such as Prompt for Conduit File Names, which is specified on the Tube & Pipe Settings dialog box when you right-click the master runs assembly in the top assembly environment.
Note: Not all the global settings really take effect for future use, such as Defer all Tube & Pipe Updates and Use R9 Bill of Materials.

How do global tube and pipe settings work in the template?

The template file differs from a normal master runs assembly file when responding to changes on the Tube & Pipe Settings dialog box. Not all settings can take effect when you create new tube and pipe assemblies from the custom template. For instance, the template can remember the Prompt for Conduit File Names setting but cannot remember Defer all Tube & Pipe Updates and Use R9 Bill of Materials.

When creating a template, you can still select the Defer all Tube & Pipe Updates and Use R9 Bill of Materials options on the Tube & Pipe Settings dialog box, but these settings are automatically cleared next time you use the template to create routes and runs. You can hence only modify these settings for master runs assemblies at a later time.
