Display-Update Settings and Defer all Updates

When changes are made to a standard Autodesk Inventor assembly, routes and runs, and positional representations, the tube and pipe assembly defaults to automatically update. To save time when updating the whole tube and pipe assembly, you can defer automatic updates including tube, pipe, and hose components.

With defer updates, you can see the effect a change has on an individual route, run, or the tube and pipe runs subassembly before repopulating.

When is defer tube and pipe updates useful?

Especially for large tube and pipe runs assemblies, you can defer automatic updates when:

What types of tube and pipe defer updates can be done?

There are 3 levels of deferring tube and pipe updates:

Defer all Tube & Pipe Updates

Available at the tube and pipe runs assembly level. Defer all tube and pipe updates when you are editing normal parts in a standard Autodesk Inventor assembly or editing positional representations. After the Defer all Tube & Pipe Updates check box is selected:

  • The whole tube and pipe runs assembly is invisible. Neither the tube and pipe runs assembly nor the associated parts in drawings automatically update. You cannot create new pipe routes and runs in the tube and pipe runs assembly.
  • Most commands specific to Tube & Pipe are disabled.

Route Objects Only

Available when the tube and pipe runs assembly or an individual run is active. You can defer automatic updates for the whole pipe run or specified routes. When the Route Objects Only check box is selected, the associated routes and runs are displayed as centerlines, underlying components are hidden and do not respond to changes.

It is disabled when the Defer all Tube & Pipe Updates check box is selected on the Tube & Pipe Settings dialog box at the tube and pipe runs assembly level.

All Tube & Pipe Objects

Available when the tube and pipe runs assembly or an individual run is active. You can allow the whole pipe run or specified routes to fully update. When the All Tube & Pipe Objects check box is selected, the associated routes and runs are displayed as populated and automatically respond to changes.

It is disabled when the Defer all Tube & Pipe Updates check box is selected on the Tube & Pipe Settings dialog box at the tube and pipe runs assembly level.

Note:
  • When a new route is created and populated, it is displayed as populated by default. New routes are never displayed as centerlines even when the pipe run is set to Route Object Only. You can defer automatic updates for new individual routes at the pipe run level.
  • When a pipe run contains any routes that are not allowed to automatically update to changes, you cannot save the pipe run to an ISOGEN .pcf file.

How does Display/Update Settings differ from the display settings specified by tube and pipe styles?

Using the Display/Update Settings list, you can determine whether routes and runs fully update to changes in the tube and pipe assembly or normal parts in the standard Autodesk Inventor assembly.

On the Tube & Pipe Styles dialog box Display tab, you can determine the appearance for piping components. When a route is populated, the piping component appearance is used to display the final route.

How does tube and pipe defer updates interact with Autodesk Inventor defer update settings?

When a standard Autodesk Inventor assembly is open, you can use the Tools tab Options panel Application Options Assembly tab to defer changes to the whole standard Autodesk Inventor assembly. It does not affect the tube and pipe defer updates.

In the drawing environment, when the Defer Updates check box on the Tools tab Options panel Document Settings Drawing tab is not selected, you can defer automatic updates for individual runs or routes. Then, routes and runs remain in the original status in tube and pipe drawings until you allow automatic updates in the assembly environment.

Note: When a new route is created and populated, it is always documented into the tube and pipe drawing even if the parent pipe run is set to defer updates.
