Inventor to Revit Family File (RFA) Workflow

You can create a simple and intelligent Revit Family File (RFA) file in Inventor which can be used in BIM ecosystems.

Revit Family File (RFA) is a feature based parametric file which can be modified in Revit.

Follow the step by step workflow below to create a simplified assembly or part in a single file with configurations native to the Revit Family File (RFA).

Inventor to Revit Family File (RFA)

Step 1

Open in Inventor

Step 2

Simplify data

Step 3

Recognize geometry

Step 4

Add and edit System connectors

Step 5

Verify data

Step 6

Export to RFA

Open an Inventor or open a 3rd party file.

For an assembly file, use the BIM Simplify tools reduce the complexity of the model and combine the components into one simplified part.

Skip this step for a part file.

Use the Feature Recognition tools to find segments of model geometry and convert them into a set of native modeling options included in Autodesk Revit. Use the tools in the BIM Exchange Environment to:
  • Add and edit System connectors,
  • Set metadata
  • Define properties.
Verify Model Data using the Check Design and Check Revit Features tools Export the components and connectors to a RFA file using Export Building Component.
Note: ADSK is a DWG based Autodesk Exchange file without parameters. ADSK files can be created using Export Building Component without any additional workflow steps. However, you can use some of the tools listed in the workflow chart above to provide greater complexity to the exported ADSK file. Click here for more information.
