Defining and Modifying Continuous Rails

To define a continuous rail

To modify a continuous rail

You can add a top rail and up to 2 handrails to a railing type.

Continuous rails are sub-components of a railing system that are used as handrails and top rails (which can be used as handrails). Continuous rails comply with building codes for public buildings that for safety reasons must allow continuous support for the person using an egress stair.

  1. Select a placed railing system in the model, or click Architecture tabCirculation panel (Railing).
  2. On the Properties palette, click Edit Type.
Note: Changes made to type properties affect all railings of this type in the project. You can click Duplicate to create a new railing type.
  3. In the Type Properties dialog, under Top Rail, Handrail 1, or Handrail 2, click the Type value.
  4. Click the drop-down arrow, and click to select a type.
  5. Handrail only: For Position, select Left, Right, or Left and Right. See Railing System Type Properties.
  6. In the Type Properties dialog, click Apply to see the changes.
  7. Click OK to close the Type Properties for the railing system.
  8. Press Tab to highlight the rail, and click to select it.
  9. Click the pin icon () to unpin the rail and modify this instance of the rail.
  10. On the Properties palette, click Edit Type. (See Continuous Rail Type Properties.)
  11. In the Type Properties dialog, under Construction, modify the properties as required, and click Apply.
  12. Optionally, you can specify beginning and bottom extensions for the rail or add a termination style.
