Object Bending

The option is used for bending an object around a defined axis. The option is available using either method:

The option is available for the following structure types: shell and volumetric structure. The option is available if Solid Modeler is installed.

To bend a selected object:

  1. Specify the axis beginning and end (that is, points P1 and P2)
  2. Specify the position of point P3. In other words, specify the normal to neutral plane (the plane passing through points P1 and P2 and perpendicular to the normal direction). The neutral plane defines an area where the material is neither compressed nor stretched during bending. If the angle value is positive, the material above the axis (that is, along the segment P1 - P2) is compressed; whereas, material beneath the axis is stretched.
  3. Specify the bend radius and bend angle.
  4. Specify the type of bending:
    • On one side

In this case, the neutral plane passes through the origin of the area to be bent. (After the operation, the origin remains unchanged).

For this type of bending, the According to normal to the neutral plane option is available, which determines the part (side) of an object to be bent. The following image shows what happens situation when the right part of an object part is bent (according to normal to the neutral plane).

    • Equally at both sides (center bending)

In this case, the neutral plane passes through the center of the area to be bent. After the operation, both the origin and the end of the area are bent. For this type of bending, the According to normal to the neutral plane option is not available
