Use the options on the Railing tab to define parameters of a railing that may be generated for spiral stairs.
If Generate railing is selected, the options on the Railing tab are accessible and a railing will be generated during creation of spiral stairs. When Generate railing is not selected, a railing will not be generated.
Specify parameters of profiles:
- Posts - Posts are always vertical profiles (direction is compatible with direction of the Z axis). Posts are positioned so that the axis of the greater moment of inertia is situated in the railing plane.
- Handrails
- Middle rail
- Lower rail
To create lower and middle rails and specify their profiles and families, select Middle rail and Lower rail.
Profiles of handrails, posts, and rails available on the selection lists are those defined in the Profile List dialog. To add a profile to a list, click
. The Profile list dialog displays, where you can select a profile.
Profile families available on the selection lists for handrails, posts, and rails are those defined in the Family Manager dialog. To add a family to the list, click
. The Family manager dialog displays, where you can select a family.
Note: The list of handrail and rail profiles may be filtered to include only some profile types. If there is no profile on the selection list, click

. In the Profile list dialog, select a profile type. The profile list may contain the following profile types:
- Handrail: round and rectangular tubes, angles, flat profiles, C-profiles, round profiles
- Rails: round and rectangular tubes, angles, flat profiles, round profiles
The geometry of spiral stairs determines the length of a railing, because the railing is generated along the entire length of stairs.
Define railing parameters:
- Dimensions (railing height, rail spacing)
- Post every - number of steps (not adjoined to by the post) between posts of the railing
- Number of steps to first post
- If Additional post on end of railing is selected, the railing will be generated so that the additional railing post is situated on the last step.
- Materials
- Handrail/Post Weld Th - define a thickness of the weld joining the handrail with posts.
- More - click this to open the Details of railing dialog where you can specify additional railing parameters.
Specify parameters in the Details of railing dialog:
- Weld type and thickness
- Plate thickness
- Materials
- Holes diameter
- Plate dimensions
- Location of bolt holes.
- Under Holes/Bolts
- Bolt diameter
- Grade
- Settings – click this to open the Bolt settings dialog
Use the buttons at the bottom of the Spiral staircase dialog:
- Apply - after you click this, the stairs defined in the dialog are generated on screen without closing the dialog. This lets you check whether the spiral stairs have been generated correctly.
- OK - click this to generate the defined stairs and close the dialog.
- Hide - after you click this, the dialog is no longer visible on screen. To restore the dialog display on screen, press Esc.
- Close - click this to close the dialog without generating the spiral stairs.
