To optimize a vertical profile

Use Profile Optimization for Autodesk InfraWorks 360 to engineer a design road’s optimal vertical path based on parameters you define.

  1. Click to display the Profile Optimization panel.
Note: Roads that have multiple zones cannot be submitted for profile optimization.
  2. On the Profile Optimization panel, the Road cell displays the name of the currently selected design road. Accept the selection, or select another design road in the model.
  3. Specify a Design Speed.
  4. Enter a Job Description.
Tip: A description unique to the optimization job makes it easier to differentiate between multiple optimization alternatives in the Job Monitor.

  5. Under Advanced Settings, in the Profile Constraints area, define any of the following:
    • Maximum Grade, as a percentage, for tangents. This value applies to both positive and negative grades. For example, if this value is set to 10%, the grade will not exceed +10% or -10%.
    • Minimum PVI Spacing.
    • Required Drainage Grade, as a percentage: The lowest acceptable tangent grade for allowing drainage from the road.
    • PVI Frequency: A lower setting adds fewer PVIs, resulting in a smoother road involving more earthwork. A higher setting adds more PVIs, resulting in a road that more closely follows existing terrain, involving less earthwork.
    • Anchored PVIs: Select or clear existing PVIs that must maintain their station and elevation. New PVIs will be added between anchored PVIs.
  6. Under Advanced Settings, in the Quantities Options area, specify locations and capacities of borrow pits and waste pits in order to balance earthwork volumes.
    • : Add a borrow pit or waste pit. As prompted, click a station on the road to populate the table.
    • Type toggles between borrow pit and waste pit. Station changes the value. Access Distance specifies the distance from the road to the pit. Capacity specifies the total volume that can be borrowed or dumped.
    • : Remove a borrow pit or waste pit.
  7. Under Advanced Settings, in the Construction Rules area, specify rules for when to use bridges and tunnels.
  8. Under Advanced Settings, in the Construction & Earthwork Cost area, set and review unit prices for earthwork and construction activities and materials.

The values you set will be used to calculate your optimization results. For more information, see the topic on construction and earthwork costs.

  9. Click Optimize It.
