Shorten a Steel Framing Element for Steel Fabrication

Shorten the start, end, top, or bottom of a steel beam, brace, or column to accommodate the geometry necessary for steel fabrication elements.

To shorten a steel framing element

  1. Click Steel tab Modifiers panel (Shorten).
  2. Click on the steel framing element. The cut will be placed on the nearest end to where you clicked on the element.
Note: The cut is created on the nearest edge of the selected structural element and you can not change its position after you create it.
  3. Select the cut to access its properties in the Properties palette:
    • Increase the length value further shortens the cut
    • Enter a negative length value to extend the element
    • To create a diagonal cut, assign angle values along the beam height and width.

Element cuts by shortening are only visible when the Detail Level of the view is set to Fine.
