To Move Civil 3D Objects to an ArcGIS Layer

You can move objects that are created in Civil 3D to existing ArcGIS layers in a drawing and then save the layers back to ArcGIS, which adds the new objects to ArcGIS.

An ArcGIS layer that matches the type of object you want to add to it must already exist in the drawing. An ArcGIS layer for an object type is created when you import an ArcGIS dataset. For example, when you import an ArcGIS dataset into a drawing that contains an alignment, a dedicated ArcGIS layer is created for that alignment in the drawing.

If you want to add another alignment to the ArcGIS dataset, you can create a new alignment in Civil 3D and move it to the alignment ArcGIS layer. When you save back to ArcGIS, the new alignment is added to the online ArcGIS dataset.

To move a Civil 3D object to an ArcGIS layer

  1. Select the object you want to move.
Note: You can select multiple objects of the same type, but the selection set cannot contain objects of different types, like an alignment and a parcel.
  2. Right-click to display the context menu and click Move to ArcGIS Layer.

The Move to ArcGIS Layer dialogue box is displayed.

  3. In the Destination ArcGIS Layer list, select the layer to which you want to move the objects.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Save back the layer to ArcGIS to add the object to the online ArcGIS dataset.

To move a pipe or structure to an ArcGIS layer

To move a pipe or structure to an ArcGIS layer, it must be part of the pipe network named ArcGIS Network. The pipe network named ArcGIS Network is created when you import a pipe network from ArcGIS into a drawing. You can add new pipes and structures to the ArcGIS Network and then move those pipes and structures to the pipe and structure ArcGIS layers. When you save back the layers to ArcGIS, the new pipes and structures will be added to the ArcGIS dataset online.

  1. Import an ArcGIS dataset that contains pipes and structures into a drawing.

This creates a pipe network named ArcGIS Network in the drawing and creates ArcGIS layers for pipes and structures.

  2. Add new pipes or structures to the ArcGIS Network.
  3. Select the new pipes, right-click to display the context menu and click Move to ArcGIS Layer.
  4. Select the ArcGIS layer that was created for the imported pipes.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 to add the new structures to the ArcGIS layer that was created for the imported structures.
  7. Save back the layers to ArcGIS.

To remove a Civil 3D object from an ArcGIS layer

If you move an object to an ArcGIS layer, you can remove it from the layer before the layer is saved back to ArcGIS by moving it to the <None> layer. However, after the layer is saved back to ArcGIS, the object cannot be moved to another layer or to the <None> layer. To remove an object from ArcGIS, you can open the map online and delete the object in ArcGIS.

  1. Select the object you want to remove from the ArcGIS layer.
  2. Right-click to display the context menu and click Move to ArcGIS Layer.

The Move to ArcGIS Layer dialogue box is displayed.

  3. In the Destination ArcGIS Layer list, select <None>.
  4. Click OK.
