Display scene information (HUD) in a view panel

You can display all sorts of scene information, such as current frame, frame rate, the view axis, the origin axis, polygon count, and more in a view panel using the Heads Up Display (HUD) options.

To create or edit a custom readout in the HUD, use the headsUpDisplay MEL command as described in Create a custom heads-up display readout.

To... Do this

Show or hide HUD items in all view panels.

Select items from the Display > Heads Up Display submenu - see Heads Up Display (HUD) Options.

Tip: Pressing and holding Ctrl keeps this menu open while selecting multiple options. (It will close when you move the mouse away from the menu.) If you prefer to display this menu as a separate window so you can toggle settings on and off, click the tear-off line at the top. (See Tear off menus in the Menus and Menusets topic for an example.)

Show or hide the HUD per view panel.

In the view panel, toggle the Show > HUD option. This shows or hides all HUD items at once.

Change the colors of the HUD text

Choose Windows > Settings/Preferences > Color Settings to open the Color Settings window. Expand the Heads Up Display section on the General tab and set the colors for each option.

Set the display default preference for the view axis (lower-left corner of the view panel) and the origin axis

Choose Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences to open the Preferences window, select Display, then toggle the option for Axes > View axis and Origin axis.
