Calculate Areas in a Project

Calculate the defined areas in your project once the rooms, project standards, and room assignment types are assigned.

  1. Click Quantification tab Areabook Extension panel (Calculate Areas).
  2. In the Calculate Areas dialog, specify the calculation Type. The default for calculation is Standard.
    • Click (Duplicate this type) to create a new type with different parameters for future use.
    • Click (Rename the type) to change the name of the currently selected calculation type.
    • Click (Delete the type) to delete the currently selected calculation type.
  3. Under Selection, click Selection.
  4. In the Rooms/Room Groups Selection dialog, select the rooms and room groups to be considered in the calculation.
  5. Select Autocheck new rooms to ensure new rooms created after the area calculation are included in future calculations.
  6. Click Autocheck new room groups to ensure new rooms defined after the area calculation are included in future calculations.
  7. Click OK to accept the room selection or Cancel to close the dialog without specifying rooms or room groups.
  8. Define the calculation parameters of the project type. The table below this procedure defines the parameters and values in this dialog.
  9. Click Calculate.

A progress bar displays throughout the calculation process. Once complete, the room tag labels will populate the drawing as defined in the project standard.

  10. Click OK to close the Calculate Areas dialog and save the current calculation type. Click Cancel to disregard changes and close the Calculate Areas dialog.
Area calculation parameters
Name Description
Standard
Standard Displays the current project standard.
Selection
Rooms Displays the number of selected rooms considered when calculating area.
Groups Displays the number of selected room groups considered when calculating area.
Selection Opens the Rooms/Room Groups Selection dialog in which you select the rooms and room groups to be considered when calculating area.
Calculation Range
Detect subareas under stairs Includes the subareas under stairs according to the current height lines definitions.
Detect subareas under roof Includes the subareas under roofs according to the current height lines definitions.
Detect niche subareas

Includes the niches that touch the floor and affect the floor area. As niches are detected:

  • Floor-to-ceiling wall niches (Revit element Niche - Wall niche with elevation 0)
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows (parapet 0)
Compute room areas at Either wall center, wall core center, wall core layer, or wall finish. This corresponds to the Revit options of room area calculation.
Create Visual Representation
Roof height lines Displays the height lines of the roof in the project. A new area calculation is required to view this change.
Room dissection

Creates a graphical representation of the area dissection to display for transparency and mathematical evidence of the area calculation. The label of each dissected area has a unique identifier and a length specification to compare the calculated area evaluation with the project. Dissections do not display by default to preserve system resources.

Unless rectangular, rooms are automatically dissected into subareas. This is an important part of the area evaluation and needs to be presented to many building authorities for approval.

For non-rectangular rooms, Areabook tries to dissect all areas into rectangles. If this is insufficient due to the geometric complexity of the room, areas are dissected in trapezoids, then triangles, and if needed circles or circle segments.

Stair subarea contours Displays the contours of the calculated stair subareas in the plan as grouped lines. Contours do not display by default to preserve system resources.
Roof subarea contours Displays the contours of the calculated roof subareas in the plan as grouped lines. Contours do not display by default to preserve system resources.
Niche subarea contours Displays the contours of the calculated niche subareas in the plan as grouped lines. Contours do not display by default to preserve system resources.
Generate Project Data
Generate Project Data Enables Areabook to generate Areabook Ids which are necessary when exporting information for Revit schedules or Design Web Format. When selected, Room, Subarea, Room group, and Floor area data can be generated.
Room Generates room data for Revit schedules and Design Web Format.
Subarea Generates subarea data for Revit schedules and Design Web Format.
Room group Generates room group data for Revit schedules and Design Web Format.
Floor area Generates floor area data for Revit schedules and Design Web Format.
Export
Export Format Selects the format in which to export the area calculation data. Either MS Excel, CSV, or Design Web Format (DWF/DWFx).
Export Type Select the area type to export. Either LA (Living Area), NRA (Net Room Area), or GFA (Gross Floor Area)
Export Template (Excel export format only). Specifies the excel template file to use when exporting area calculation data. The visible template files are dependent on the project standards.
