Video: Create a Toposolid

Create a toposolid by sketching a boundary and defining elevation points.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Use the site view to create the boundary of the toposolid in sketch mode.
  2. Modify elevation lines and points on the boundary sketch.
  3. Use the controls on the ribbon to specify different elevations for points on the toposolid.
  4. Use other objects in the model to cut the toposolid element.
Note: This video may have been recorded using a different version of Revit than the most current version. When using another software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

In Revit, the site around a building is represented by a toposolid element. You can model a toposolid directly in Revit by establishing elevation points representing contours of the site, or you can also import a CAD file with 3D contour information to create a toposolid. In this video we will demonstrate how to create a toposolid directly in your model. The visibility of toposolids may be turned off in floor plan views, so first, open a site view. On the Massing and Site Tab, click Toposolid. Use tools on the Draw panel to sketch the boundary of the toposolid. In this case we will draw a rectangle. Click Finish when the boundary is complete.

Now click Modify Sub Elements to alter the elevation of the points and edges creating the boundary. Select the edge on the left side and use the in-canvas control to raise it to 6000. Select the edge on the right, use the control on the ribbon to raise the elevation to 1000 and press Enter.

Now add points to further shape the toposolid . Click Add Point. Choose to add points along the surface with an offset, or by an absolute elevation measured from the selected datum. In this example place contour elevations based on the Project Base Point. Set the elevation as you place the points representing the contours of the site. Notice as you place points, you can see the elevation of the surface near the cursor. When you are done placing points, click Modify to complete the toposolid. You can see the contours displayed on the toposolid. Contour display is a type property of the toposolid. The layers making up the toposolid are controlled by changing the structure of the toposolid and are visible when the toposolid is cut, like in a section view. Toposolids can be cut with other elements such as a wall, foundation, or void mass elements.

Use toposolids to represent site conditions in your models.
