Use the Tag by Example tool to apply tags to elements based on an existing tag.
New tags use the same appearance and properties as the selected example tag. Various selection options are available in the tool’s contextual ribbon for filtering selection, replacing existing tags, tag placement options, and previewing new tags.
Supported categories
The tool supports the following categories:
- Tags on loadable component family instances
- Wall tags
- Room, Area, and Space tags
To create tags using an example
- Select an example tag whose properties you want to apply.
Note: You can also start by clicking Annotate tab

- On the contextual ribbon or on the Annotate tabTag panelTag drop-down, click
(Tag by Example).
- Select target hosts to be tagged using the properties of the example tag.
Note: Use standard Revit selection methods, such as window selection or Ctrl/ Shift keys to add or remove elements. Only valid hosts are selectable.
- On the Properties Palette or the Modify | Tags tab, in the Filter & Creation panel:
- Use Filter Targets to filter target hosts by category, family, or type.
- Use Nested Families to include or exclude nested elements.
- Click Replace Existing Tags to replace tags of the same category. Previous tag locations display in the Alert color, and new tag locations display in the Editing color, as defined in the Graphics options.
- In the Tag Placement panel:
- Click Match Tag Orientation to match the orientation of the example tag.
- Click Match Host Rotation to maintain consistent positioning regardless of target host rotation.
- Click Match Host Flip/Mirror to maintain consistent positioning for flipped or mirrored target hosts.
Note: Some options may not apply to all tag types. - To turn off a visual preview of new tags on selected target hosts, toggle Preview.
- Click Finish to create the tags.
