Create tools (Edit Model)

When you want to create the surfaces or solid bodies of preserve or obstacle geometry without leaving the Generative Design workspace, use the Create tools in the Edit Model contextual environment.

Use the tools on the Edit Model Solid tab > Create panel to create solid shapes. These are the same tools available in the Design workspace > Solid tab > Create panel.

Note: Select profiles or planar faces on solid bodies when using these tools.

Use the tools on the Edit Model Surface tab > Create panel to create surfaces. These are the same tools available in the Design workspace > Surface tab > Create panel. Surfaces are an outer skin that represents the shape of the model. They have no thickness. Surfaces are sometimes used to patch up openings in a model.

Note: Select 2D sketches when using these tools.

Use the links in the table to find out more about the tools.

Tool Purpose
generative model icon New Generative Model Create a new model in the same design.
create sketch icon Create Sketch Start a sketch either on a blank document, or on the face of an existing 3D geometry. Click this to access the Sketch Tools.
extrude solid icon Extrude Extend the shape of a solid body, in a straight line.
revolve solid icon Revolve Extend the shape of a solid body, about an axis.
sweep solid icon Sweep Extend the shape of a solid body, along a defined path.
rib icon Rib Add support to a model using a single line or curve that intersects with already created geometry. The curve must intersect with solid model geometry in both directions.
hole icon Hole Create a hole through a solid body.
box primitive icon Box Create a solid body using the box primitive.
cylinder primitive icon Cylinder Create a solid body using the cylinder primitive.
sphere icon Sphere Create a solid body using the sphere primitive.
connector obstacle icon Connector Obstacle Create solid body obstacle geometry, to represent bolts and pins in an assembly.
More Solids Create solid bodies from sketches.
  • Loft - connects two or more closed profiles by means of a smooth surface transition shape.
  • Web - similar to the Rib tool, the Web tool creates geometry from open sketch curves that intersect with pre-existing bodies. The Web tool uses multiple curves to create several merged elements.
  • Torus - creates a solid body ring.
  • Coil - creates a solid coil.
  • Pipe - creates a solid pipe.
  • Thread - adds real or cosmetic threads to your design. Cosmetic threads apply the appearance of threads. The Modeled option cuts actual threads into the geometry.
Pattern Create copies of faces, features, bodies, and components.
  • Rectangular - creates copies of objects in one or two directions.
  • Circular Pattern - creates copies of objects around a selected axis.
  • Pattern on Path - copies objects along a selected path, rather than following a circular or rectangular path.
mirror solid icon Mirror Create a mirror image of faces, features, bodies, or whole components, on the opposite side of a face or plane.
thicken icon Thicken Create a solid by thickening a surface face.
fluid volume icon Fluid Volume Create a body that either envelopes, or fills, the interior of the selected bodies.
