The recommended way transfer files between Mudbox and other Autodesk products is to use the
Send To option in the
File menu. But in order to use this option, the versions of both the originating and destination software must match, for example Mudbox 2018 and Maya 2018.
If you do not have the same version of both products, for example Mudbox 2018 and Maya 2017, the send to option is disabled. However, you can also use the following workarounds to transfer files.
Note: It is still highly recommended to use matching software versions for a better compatibility.
Manual file transfer
Another way of moving files between Mudbox and other software is to do so using the FBX format. This is the simplest way:
- In Maya, choose
.
Note: Do not choose
, this will open the Export Options, which you do not need. If you do open the Export Options by mistake, click
Export... and the window will close.
- In the Export window that appears, select
FBX
from the
File of Type drop-down menu. The
Options pane on the right side of the Export window will display the FBX Export settings.
- Expand
, and select which FBX version to use. (For example, use FBX 2017 so that Mudbox 2017 will read the data correctly.)
- In Mudbox, use the
option or simply export as FBX.
See

Compatibility across products using FBX.
Alternate workaround
You can also use this method to transfer files between Mudbox and other Autodesk products.
To transfer files between mismatched versions of Autodesk software:
Locate the appropriate
syncfg file and modify the executable path so that it points to the version of the product you want to send to. The syncfg file is found in the following locations:
- Windows 10: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Synergy
- Mac OS X: /Applications/Autodesk/Synergy
-
Linux: /opt/Autodesk/Syn
Syncfg files are named according to your product and operating system. (For example on 64-bit Windows: Mudbox.2018.0. Windows.64.syncfg, Max2018.20.0.64.syncfg, Maya.2018.1.64.syncfg.)
