Best Practices: Overview
This guide provides an overview of best practices for setting up and using Model Coordination.
When project team members use Model Coordination to aggregate design models and automate the coordination process in the cloud, they reduce costly and time-consuming rework for construction models. Involving team members earlier in the coordination process saves time by allowing designers to self-check their models and deliver higher quality designs. Model Coordination allows a broad range of users to collaborate with live access to model data and view the latest clash results.
When setting up coordination spaces and preparing files, it's important to consider the outcomes you want to achieve. There are two types of clashes when reviewing models:
- Relevant clashes are those that have a high risk of impact on the design process.
- Nonrelevant clashes hide the relevant clashes due to inaccurate modeling or limited collaboration and are usually noise.
Some projects may be suited to a workflow that uses Model Coordination with Navisworks to identify and manage relevant vs. nonrelevant clashes. Consider the following to determine how to use Model Coordination and Navisworks to maximize efficiency for your particular project and coordination workflows.
Model Coordination:
- Web-based, collaborative, accessible, easy to learn
- Used for targeted model clashing during all stages of a project lifecycle
- Automatic clash detection for various file formats (IFC*, RVT, DWG, NWC*)
- Quickly and efficiently resolve nonrelevant clashes and focus on quick wins
- Fast model iterations
- ACC issue management integration
- Autodesk Platform Services API
Navisworks:
- Desktop based, limited access, steep learning curve
- Used for fixed milestones and complete project clash and review
- Multiple file-format support (70+ file types)
- Manually adjust clashes
- Settings for clearance and tolerance and rules-based clash tests
- Advanced clash detection and issue management
- Advanced reporting features
- ACC issue management integration through the Navisworks Coordination issues add-in
