Saving and Exporting Files Reference
Saves a file with a specified name and file type. Exports Inventor data to other file formats. Saved files remain open.
What's New: 2022
Saving
Save
Saves only the active file, or saves all open files.
Save As
Saves the file in the default format, but with a different name.
Save Copy As
Saves the active document to a specified file. When invoked from the 3D Print Preview toolbar, Preview and Options are available.
Save Copy As Template
Saves the active file as a template in a templates folder.
Pack and Go
Packages the currently active file with its referenced files into a single location.
Save in
Shows path of the active directory and specifies destination of the saved file.
Locations
Shows file locations defined in the active project file. A tool tip shows the path. Click a location to change to the folder. The folder tree and files are listed in the main window of the dialog box.
File name
Specifies the name of the file to save. If the file was saved, the file name displays.
File of type
Filters file list to include only files of a specific type. Click the arrow to show list, and select a file type. The extension is added to the file name.
Save
Saves highlighted file (with file name and type that you specify).
Cancel
Cancels the save operation and closes the dialog box.
Exporting
Access: File Export
...
Image
Exports a file in an image file format, such as BMP, JPEG, PNG, or TIFF.
You can export an Inventor file as a PNG or TIFF image with a transparent background. You can export a BMP image with a white background. In the Image Save Options dialog, select Transparent Background.
When editing a component in the context of the assembly, you can save an image of just the component being edited. Select "Only Show Active Components for In-Place Editing.
3D PDF
Exports a model to a 3D PDF file.
Exports a file in PDF format.
CAD Format
Exports a file into another CAD format, such as Parasolid, PRO-E, or STEP.
Export to DWG
Exports the file into DWG, as either 2D drawing or 3D solid model.
Export to RVT
Exports the model as a Revit (RVT) model.
Export to DWF
Exports the file into DWF.
Send DWF
Runs the default email application with the DWF file attached.
Available file types
.CATPart, .CATProduct
CATIA V5 part and assembly files. (versions R10 - R19)
.CATPart
CATIA V5 part. (versions R10 - R19)
.x_b, .x_t
Parasolid Binary and Text files. (versions 9.0 - 23.0)
.g, .neu
Pro/ENGINEER Granite and Neutral files. (Granite versions 1.0 - 6.0)
BMP
Raster Image.
DWF
2D vector file used to publish drawings on the Web and also viewed in Autodesk Design Review.
DWFx
3D ASCII file. You can view the published data (2D only) in Internet Explorer 7. To view the published 3D data, install the free viewer, Autodesk Design Review.
DWG
AutoCAD drawing files and Inventor drawing files. Model files to 3D DWG solid models.
3D DWG Save As options allow you to save solids, surfaces, and sketches to the DWG format. Only visible components are exported.
DXF
For drawing interchange format. Text files that contain drawing information that other CAD systems can read.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format.
IGES
For initial graphics exchange specification. An ANSI standard format for digital representation and exchange of information between CAD/CAM systems. (version 5.3)
JPEG
Compressed image format, typically less suitable for line drawings, and text or iconic graphics than GIF images.
JT
The JT file format is a CAD-neutral lightweight data format for archiving, visualization, collaboration, and data sharing. Supports versions up to 10.5.
OBJ
A simple data format representing geometry using vertex positions, vertex normals, texture coordinate vertices, and polygonal faces (commonly referred to as a mesh) which approximate the geometry shape.
A PDF (Portable Document Format), creates formatted documents which appear on the monitor or printer as intended. To view a file in PDF format, you need Adobe Reader, a free application by Adobe Systems.
3D PDF
In addition to PDF format, 3D PDF files include 3D representations of a model. You use 3D viewing tools to manipulate with the model in the 3D PDF file.
PNG
Portable Network Graphics. A bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. Usually produces graphics of better quality relative to GIF, JPEG, and BMP.
QIF
A Quality Information Framework file. QIF is an ANSI and ISO open standard CAD format. A QIF file contains semantic PMI (Product Manufacturing Information) and other metadata. A QIF file is suitable for human and computer readable Model Based Definition data (version 3.0).
RFA
Revit Family format, used for exporting building components to be used in Revit models. Other related formats are IFC and ADSK. For more information see About the BIM Environment.
RVT
Revit model format, used for exporting building product assemblies for use with Revit models.
SAT
Geometry objects stored in ASCII files (versions 4.0 - 7.0).
SMT
An export-neutral file type associated with ASM (Autodesk Shape Manager) files.
STEP
An international format developed to overcome some of the limitations of current data conversion standards. You can convert files created in other CAD systems to STEP format, and import into Inventor (versions AP214 and AP203E2).
STL
Outputs files of solids, regions, parts, and subassemblies for stereo lithography. The STL format reduces an entire model into multiple flat facets that approximate its shape.
XML
Outputs parameters as formatted list.
Republish All Sheets dialog box
In the Markups browser, sheet context menu, select Republish All Sheets. In this dialog box, you can select the previously published DWF to overwrite it, or enter a new name for a new DWF file. The saved DWF file contains any changes you made to the drawing file geometry, and the properties of the markup.
Republish Markup Sheets dialog box
In the Markups browser, sheet context menu, select Republish Markup Sheets. In this dialog box, you can select the previously published DWF to overwrite it, or enter a new name for a new DWF file. The saved DWF file contains any changes you made to the drawing file geometry and the properties of the markup.
