About transportable databases

Transportable databases are used for copying data between existing on-premise and cloud databases. The databases may be on different computers.

A transportable database stores a complete copy of InfoWorks WS Pro on-premise and cloud database data. You can include part of a database, the entire database, or even data from several databases. The transportable database can include both data from the database file and data from additional files kept in the remote roots. Data from on-premise and cloud databases can also be included in the same transportable database.

Transportable databases allow you to maintain the integrity and quality of your data when copying it from one database to another. All the relationships in the database (for instance between networks and simulations) are maintained as long as all objects involved in the relationship are copied at the same time, or already exist in the database.

The tree structure is unaffected, and all flag annotations are retained. When sharing data with external users, such as consultants, flags can be used to differentiate between different project areas.

The transportable and on-premise or cloud databases may have different database versions. You can copy data from a transportable database that has older database version than the cloud or on-premise database. However, you cannot copy data from transportable database that has a newer version than the cloud or on-premise database unless you update the database. You also have the option to update the transportable database.

Typically, you would use a transportable database to:

  • Transfer data between multiple sites within an organisation.
  • Send data to or from contract teams working on particular projects.
  • Send data to Autodesk for investigation.

You can copy transportable database files using Windows File Manager or other file-copying tool.

Notes:

  • A transportable database must be closed before it can be moved or copied.
  • A transportable database has a 2Gb size limit.
  • You should not use standard Windows tools to copy cloud or on-premise databases, except for normal backup purposes.
