When you receive a new version of InfoWorks WS Pro, cloud and on-premise databases may need to be updated so you can access all new features included in the software. It is recommended that you backup your existing database before you update to a new version. When a cloud and on-premise database is updated, you, or any other users, will not be able to use it in an older version of InfoWorks WS Pro.
This topic does not apply to SQL Server or Oracle databases, for which see Updating SQL Server or Oracle databases.
In most situations, updating of databases will be automatic. However, manual updates may be required if the changes are major.
You must ensure that there are no users accessing a database before you update it manually or allow it to be updated automatically.
Automated updates
Automated updates will be initiated if it is detected that, after updating, the database will remain backwards compatible. That is, if the changes will not prevent users of previous versions of InfoWorks WS Pro from using the database.
When you open a database that qualifies for an automated update, the Update To Later Database Sub-version dialog is shown. In this case, to update the database, click OK.
Users will be able to use the database as normal after the change.
Automated updates occur whether or not the user is an administrator.
If the database cannot be updated automatically, a message will be shown when you first try to use it with a new version of the product, and you will have to update the database manually.
Updating a database manually
If the changes required are large enough that the database will no longer be usable in previous versions of InfoWorks WS Pro, you must carry out a manual update.
When you open or attempt to use a database that needs a manual update, you will see a message saying so, and you will be able to do nothing more with the database until it is updated.
