Save a configuration item

When you use the check out function to edit a configuration item, any changes you make to its CAD file are not available to your team members until you commit your changes back into Upchain.

The Save function saves the checked out CAD file (and any checked out children) to Upchain, creates a new file version for the checked out CAD files, but maintains the check out lock on all linked configuration items and checked out children so that you can continue working on them. All linked configuration items are saved at the same time. This is because, ultimately, you are working on one CAD file that is linked to multiple items.

Use this feature to save incremental changes you have made to an item into Upchain. If you want to save your changes to Upchain and remove the check out lock on the item(s), you should use the Check in function instead. If you have no further changes to save, you may cancel the check out.

Requirements

Save an item

Note: You may save the CAD file in from any active configuration regardless of which configuration you initially checked out.
  1. With the cBOM view open, click Refresh.

  2. Right-click the item and select Save from the drop-down menu.

The CAD Check in window opens.

  3. Review each configuration cBOM and eBOM tree to confirm each structure is correct.

  4. Click OK to proceed.

The CAD plugin now begins to save the CAD files (and any associated drawings that were also checked out) into Upchain. Monitor the Status bar to observe its progress. Do not close or switch the active CAD file in SOLIDWORKS until the Save process has finished.

Note: If Upchain detects that no model changes have occurred, it displays a confirmation window asking if you wish to proceed. This is just to warn you that you may be making a new file version unnecessarily. Click Yes to proceed.

Once the Save process has finished:

  • The CAD files remain in your home folder.
  • The CAD file version is increased by one for all edited CAD files that were saved.
  • The check out lock remains on all checked out items, including all linked configuration items.
  • If you save an assembly, all checked out children are also saved into Upchain. Any additional items added to the cBOM are displayed in the CAD Check in window for you to decide what is added to the eBOM.

Now, you may continue editing your files. Once you're done and want to remove the check out locks, you may check in your items.

Drawings during save

Any associated drawings that are also checked out are saved during the save process of the configuration items regardless of which item you save from. In other words, you do not have to switch to a specific configuration to save an associated drawing.

Note: If a checked out child component has a configuration that is not used in the parent assembly being saved, then any drawings associated with the unused configuration are not saved, even though the child component is saved. You must ensure any drawings like this are saved separately.

Translations during save

During a save, you can have Upchain create PDF and DWG translations of the drawings. To do this, your Tenant Administrator must enable the tenant properties: drawing.create.dwg and drawing.create.pdf.

Each configuration receives its own set of translations and visualization so that each one can be analyzed individually within the PDF Viewer and 3D Viewer.
