SOLIDWORKS configurations in Upchain

Upchain enables you to register each configuration contained within a SOLIDWORKS CAD file to its own item with its own eBOM structure. You may choose which configurations you want to create an item for and place each configuration item in a BOM location of your choosing. Therefore, the same CAD file is registered to multiple items based on how many configurations it contains that are registered into Upchain as items. Because of this, each configuration item from the same CAD file is closely linked to each other.

This functionality is available when the tenant property enable.configurations.solidwork is enabled. Contact support for more information on enabling this tenant property in your tenant. You should use CAD plugin version 23.5 or higher to ensure you receive all necessary functionality and fixes.

Important: Once this property is enabled, it cannot be disabled again. This is because it fundamentally changes how Upchain stores and manages data within the tenant. This also means you cannot enable this property once data is already in your tenant.

Supported configuration types

Upchain recognizes configurations created in three ways:

  • Normal configurations created from the configuration tab
  • Configurations based on design tables
  • Derived configurations

Regardless of how the configuration was created, Upchain will register each one to a configuration item in the same way should you choose to create an item for a configuration.

This series of topics takes you through the main points of working with configuration items in the CAD plugin and web application. If you don’t see a topic listed, it is likely the case that a topic found here is valid.

SOLIDWORKS configuration limitations in Upchain

In addition to the topics outlined in this section, please note the additional areas of Upchain that are affected when SOLIDWORKS configurations are enabled:

  • The 'Find Item' and 'Attach Active CAD' functions in the CAD plugin are not available.
  • The 'item version deletion' and 'file version deletion' functions are not available.
