PDF viewer functionality overview

The PDF viewer opens to the first page of the document you chose to open. The PDF viewer provides many tools to manipulate the view of the PDF, create detailed markups, and send the document to a specified user through an investigation request (IR).

The main header provides information about the document and buttons to download the document and create an IR. All other tools are at the bottom of the page in the main tools menu.

Main header

The main header shows the name of the document, the date it was uploaded into Upchain, the name of the person who uploaded the document, and the status of the document.

Use the page left page left and page right page right buttons, or type in a page number to navigate between pages in the document. You may also use the following keyboard shortcuts to navigate between pages:

  • Page left: Ctrl + Shift + ,
  • Page right: Ctrl + Shift + .

Click Home (home icon) in the top-right corner to return the document to the default zoom level and orientation at any time.

The main header also contains two buttons:

  • Download

    • Source file - Downloads the original document (source file) in it's original file format.
    • Markup as PDF - Downloads the document with the currently active markup as a PDF file.
  • Create IR - Creates an IR directly from the document. Read more here.

Main tools menu

View controls

Use these functions to adjust the view of the document.

  • pan Pan - This option is selected by default and enables you to move the document around in all directions.

  • zoom Zoom - Use this option to zoom in and out on the document.

  • camera interactions Camera Interactions - Click this option to then select from:

    • fit to view Fit to View - Recenters and zooms the document to fit the screen.
    • roll Roll - Enables you to rotate the document a full 360 degrees

Document analysis and interactions

Use these functions to create markups, measure, navigate to each page of the document, and select text from the document to copy and paste elsewhere.

Markup

This menu provides tools to draw freehand, add text, callouts, shapes, and arrows, as well as adjust the size, color and opacity of each object. When adding a new markup object, an additional floating menu opens to enable you to adjust these settings as you go. When you are finished creating a markup, you may save it to the list of markups, take a snapshot image of the markup to use elsewhere, or create an investigation request. Measure

This menu provides a number of tools to measure various aspects of your document.

  • distance Distance - Measure the distance between two points. Click a starting point, then click again to draw a line between the two points. A dialog shows the distance between the start and endpoints.

  • angle Angle - Measure the angle between two line segments. Click a starting point, then click to draw the first line segment. Click a third time to draw a second line. A dialog shows the angle between the two lines drawn.

  • area Area - Measure the area within a drawn shape. Click a starting point, then click to draw the first line segment. At this point, a dialog dynamically shows the area of the shape drawn by the first line segment and your pointer. Continue to click to draw successive line segments. The dialog updates to show the area as you draw. Click the starting point to close the shape. The area dialog shows the completed shape area.

  • arc Arc - Measure the distance along an arc. Click a starting point, then click the end point of the arc. A dialog shows the distance drawn along the arc.

  • calibrate Calibrate - Calibrate the measurement tools to the units and scale used in the document. Click a starting point, then click a second point. In the dialog that opens, type in the distance and select the units for the line segment you drew.

    Tip: Calibrate the drawing before measuring anything.
  • delete Delete - Remove a measurement from the document.

    Tip: Click a measurement and press Delete to delete a measurement.
  • settings Settings - Opens a dialog to configure measurement settings.

    • Select a unit from the Unit type drop-down list.
    • Select a precision level from the Precision drop-down list.
    • Toggle the Enable free measure option to measure anywhere on the document. When this option is off, you can only click on elements in the document - an orange box appears when your pointer is over an element you can click on to begin a measurement.
  • Click Done to close the measurement tools. All measurements are hidden but saved for the next time you open the measurement tools.

Document Browser

The Document Browser lists all pages within your document and shows a thumbnail of each page. Use this tool to switch between pages.

This tool enables you to select text from the document. Once highlighted, you may copy the text to paste it elsewhere, such as a document open on your computer.

Document settings

Use these functions to configure how to view and interact with the document. Your settings are saved automatically and are applied for every subsequent document you open, until you change them or restore them to their default settings.

  • settings Settings - Use the tabs on the Settings dialog to customize the viewer. You can edit the performance and display settings, navigational tools, visual quality, and change the image environment and lighting. A description of each setting is displayed on the dialog.
  • properties Properties - Inspect properties of the document or selected objects, including constraints, materials and finishes, and identifying data.
  • layer manager Layer Manager - View the layers in your document if it has any.
  • full screen Full Screen - View the document in full screen mode.
