In this tutorial, we model the flow over a bullet moving at Mach 1.5, through air, at sea level.
Using techniques recommended for high-speed external flow, the bullet is immersed in a large air volume. A sub-region surrounds the bullet to help focus the mesh in the anticipated shock region and in the wake.
Here is the simulation geometry:
A close up view of the bullet:
The geometry is axisymmetric about the x-axis. The mesh is very fine near the body to capture the strong gradients and much coarser near the far field boundary.
The far field boundary extends about 50 chord lengths from the body. The boundary conditions are placed this far from the body to minimize their direct influence on the flow near the body.
