Add a Study Type

To add a study type to the Create Study dialog for Generative Design, create a Dynamo graph that addresses your unique design challenges, and place its DYN file and Dependencies folder in the target location.

Each study type in the Create Study dialog starts as a Dynamo graph. The Dynamo author creates the logic required to define and explore a particular design challenge. After refining and testing the graph, the author then uses it to create a study type for Generative Design.

To add study types to the Create Study dialog

  1. If you're the Dynamo author, use Dynamo for Revit to create the study type.

If other team members want to use the new study type, send them the resulting DYN file and its Dependencies folder, or copy the files to a mapped network drive that team members can access.

  2. If you're a Revit designer (architect or engineer), do one of the following:
    • Learn where these files are located on a mapped network drive.
    • Obtain the DYN file and its Dependencies folder from the Dynamo author, and place them in a folder on your computer.
  3. Open the Create Study dialog using Generative Design in Revit or Dynamo for Revit.
  4. For Choose Folder, use the drop-down list to select the folder that contains the new study type.

If you need to add a folder to the list, click Add Folder. See Manage Folders for Study Types.

The Create Study dialog lists the available study types, including the new one.

Note: A study type consists of the DYN file and its associated Dependencies folder. Both must reside in the selected folder before the study type displays in the Create Study dialog.
