Release - Damping

When the Damping tab is selected, the New Release Definition dialog is displayed.

To define a release with damping, specify a release label, select the fixed degrees of freedom at the origin and the end of the member, as well as define values of the damping coefficients CX, CY, CZ, CRX, CRY, and CRZ (these are components of the damping matrix C). The number of available damping coefficients depends on the type of structure (2D frame, 3D truss, plate, and so on). The damping value is considered only in the time history analysis.

Clicking Damping according to PS92 opens a dialog for defining damping values used in the formula given in the PS 92 seismic code. In point 5, Section 6.2.3.4 of the French seismic code PS 92 (NF P 06-013), it is necessary to consider the structure's interactions with the ground; and therefore, its influence on the damping value of the structure.

Note: A damping coefficient (such as, the damping coefficient for the UZ direction) can be defined only for the released direction (that is, for the UZ direction).
