File Naming Standards
A file naming standard is a consistent and logical set of rules for naming files to help members stay organized, quickly identify and retrieve files, and collaborate effectively with others. A naming standard consists of attributes in a specific order to create predictable and meaningful names, making information easier to find without opening each file.
A naming standard is built on the foundation of the ISO 19650 series of standards that define information management principles and requirements in the context of the digital transformation of the build environment.
A naming standard consists of naming convention attributes and related attributes:
| Attribute Type | Description | Required / Optional |
|---|---|---|
| Naming convention | Attributes whose values form the file name. | Naming convention attribute values are always required. |
| Related attributes | Attributes detailing status, revision, and classification of files. | Related attributes can be set as required or optional. |
Once a naming standard is created, it can be applied to folders so files added to those folders have to comply with the naming standard. Different naming standards can be applied to different folders. This can be useful if some collaborators use a different naming standard, or teams want to apply certain naming standards for specific file types.
The naming standards will be applied to the same folders in the Docs, Build, Cost, and Takeoff Files tools.
