AEC Data Model to Data Exchange

For Revit 2024 files containing at least one 3D view published from Revit or uploaded to an Autodesk Construction Cloud account enabled with the AEC Data Model, project members with Create + Upload or higher permissions can create a Data Exchange to share the contents of curated 3D views.

Prerequisites

Make sure you get access to AEC Data model. For more information about how to get AEC Data Model activated, see AEC Data Model API (Beta).

Important: Exchanges defined from Revit via the AEC data Model currently do not include geometry. They only consist of properties and property values. These data exchanges are only suitable for connectors that do not rely on Geometric Elements. For instance, the Autodesk Data Connector for Power BI is an example of such a connector. While these exchanges can be viewed in ACC, they do not contain any associated geometry that can be loaded into CAD tools.

Create a Data Exchange

  1. Click the Files tool.

  2. Go to the project folder and click the relevant Revit 2024 file to open the viewer.

  3. Select the Data Exchange icon on the left pane .

  1. In the Data Exchange panel, select an option from the drop-down list for each of the Categories, Family, and Type parameters in your design.

  2. Click Create Exchange.

Important: You can only create a Data Exchange from models published from Revit 2024 or later.
  3. Click the Save to field and select a folder to save your Data Exchange.

See the Folder Permissions topic for more information about controlling folder access and file actions.

  4. Click the Name field and enter a unique name for the Data Exchange.

  5. If the selected folder is not enforced by the naming standard, click Create Exchange.

Note: Members who subscribe to a shared folder will receive email notifications when changes are made to content in that folder.

Naming standard enforced folder

If the selected folder is enforced by the naming standard , the name of the Data Exchange will have to be validated.

  1. Click Continue.

    The name validator will open.

  2. The file name will error if the Data Exchange name does not conform with the naming standard. You choose between two options:

    • Edit the name now to conform with the naming standard
    • If the Holding Area is turned on, you can choose not to correct the name now and continue creating the Data Exchange.
  3. Create the Data Exchange.

If you have edited the name to conform with the naming standard, the Data Exchange will display in the selected folder.

If you have not corrected the name, the Data Exchange won't display in the selected folder until a project administrator has accessed the holding area and corrected the name.

View Data Exchanges

Your Data Exchange will display in the selected folder on web with a icon and can be viewed independently from the source Revit file.

Note: Data Exchanges are not visible on mobile devices.

Click the Data Exchange to open in the viewer. You will view only items from the original Revit view and not the entire Revit model.

You can learn more about the Data Exchange source file, last updated by, and when it was last updated, by clicking in the viewer.

If the information icon is red , the Data Exchange may be out of date as it can't update automatically. See the Frequently Asked Questions help topic for potential causes and suggested solutions.

The Data Exchange versions up when the updated source Revit file is:

  • Uploaded to the Files tool
  • Published from Revit to the Files tool
Important: If you use the Save As > Cloud Model option in Revit, this won't update the Data Exchange.

Manage Data Exchanges

You can manage Data Exchanges using most of the actions available to files. However, the following actions do not work for Data Exchanges:

  • Download source files: This also means that recipients of a shared Data Exchange, or transmittal can't download the Data Exchange.

Note: Members can view a Data Exchange by either opening it directly from the Files tool on web, or clicking a link shared from another project member.
  • Compare: Data Exchanges are not supported for a comparison.

  • Lock: You can't lock a Data Exchange.

  • Make current: You can't choose to make an older version of a Data Exchange into the current version.

Load Data Exchanges

A Data Exchange is a neutral data format which can be loaded into applications which have a Data Exchange connector.

  • Microsoft Power BI

You can retrieve data from Data Exchanges and feed it into Microsoft Power BI to create comprehensive reports and dashboards. This capability enables you to access granular exchange data for generating custom reports tailored to specific audiences.

  • Microsoft Power Automate

You can trigger automated workflows when a Data Exchange is updated. These workflows can load the properties stored in a Data Exchange into other applications such as Slack, Excel, and PowerBI.

  • Autodesk Data Connector for Dynamo

You can retrieve all parameters of data exchanges built from Autodesk Data Models, such as AEC Data Model in the Dynamo environment. It allows you to use the powerful nodes, customization, and even the automations, which makes Dynamo a popular platform in the industry.
