Copy Objects Associatively Between Parts in Assembly
When editing a part file within the assembly, you can copy geometry from one part to another, associatively, as a surface or composite feature. These features update automatically when updates are made to the original source data.
- In an assembly file, double-click the part to edit. The part environment and commands become available.
- On the ribbon, click
3D Model tab
Modify panel
Copy Object
.
Note: if you are in the Construction environment, click Construction tabManage panel
Copy Object.
- In the property panelInput Geometry:
- Bodies selection, the default, is active. Select one or more body, solids, quilts, or surfaces. Window select is supported.
- Click
to switch to Faces selection.
- In the graphics window, select the geometry to be copied as a new feature.
To maintain an adaptive relationship with the source part, ensure the Associative check box is selected. Leave it unselected if association is not needed.
Note: You can only select the type of geometry specified as the selection option (Face or Body). - Specify the

Surface is selected by default. Creates a Surface Bodies folder in the browser, a Base Surface feature for every body or every set of contiguous faces of a single body selected.
Composite creates one composite feature in the browser for the entire selection set.
Repaired Geometry creates a Repaired Geometry folder in the browser and populates it with a copy of the face as a composite feature. A Surface Bodies folder is also created and populated with a copy of the surface.
Group creates a Construction folder in the browser and populates it with a Group containing one or more surfaces.
- Method
- Click Apply to complete the specified action without closing the dialog box. Click OK to complete the specified action and close the dialog box.
- To remove the associativity, do any of the following:
- To remove the associativity temporarily between the source and the feature created with Copy Object, right-click on the Surface or Composite entry in the browser, and cancel the Adaptive selection.
- To reset the relationship back to Associative, select Adaptive in the context menu again. Selecting Adaptive in the context menu acts as an On/Off toggle.
- To permanently remove the associativity between the source and the feature created with Copy Object, right-click the Surface or Composite reference entry in the browser, and then select Break Link.
Note: Deselect the Associative option to create a single non-associative copy of geometry from another part in an assembly.
