About Managing Your Data

On-premise and cloud database provides a flexible hierarchy for managing model data and contains all your model data and results.

InfoWorks WS Pro includes comprehensive database management facilities, which let you organise your work logically and efficiently. Using these facilities you can see the overall structure of the database, break it down into its components and view any part of the data itself.

Databases can be shared between users and will probably contain mission critical information. To protect this information, some operations can only be carried out by administrators.

Manage databases

Administrators can create new on-premise or cloud databases. You may also need to update existing databases if the format changes with a new release of InfoWorks WS Pro.

Administrators can also work with special transportable databases for transferring data on disk or by e-mail.

One of the most important facilities is data deletion. Operators cannot delete potentially critical data such as networks that have been checked in and used for modelling. Administrators can delete any data that is no longer required.

Database structure

On-premise and cloud database contains a hierarchical structure of data and results sub-divided by type. Some data is version-controlled to give you greater flexibility. Data used as part of a simulation is marked as read-only.

Model groups

The top level of this hierarchical structure is the model group. All data within the on-premise and cloud database must be contained in a model group.

A model group can contain the following:

  • Other model groups.
  • Version controlled items such as networks.
  • Groups containing other types of data.

Within a model group you store all the data needed for carrying out a series of modelling tasks.

Groups and items

A group contains data of a particular type, or other groups of the same type. The groups available in InfoWorks WS Pro are listed in the Database items topic.

Working with groups and items

Groups and items can be accessed and manipulated using a tree view.

  • The InfoWorks WS Pro Explorer is a normal view that displays all the information about groups and items in the database.
  • The Model Group window only displays the tree, but can be docked at the side of the main InfoWorks WS Pro window so it is always visible.

Version controlled items

Version controlled items are given an extra level of protection. Successive versions of an item, such as a network, are stored. Only one user can check out and edit an item at any time. The item must be checked in before the changes are available to other users.
