About Specs in a Piping Model

When routing pipe and adding pipe fittings or valves to a piping model, you start with a pipe spec.

Before routing pipe, you select a pipe spec. For more information, see Set Plant 3D Paths.

A 3D piping model is spec-driven; it references piping components listed in a pipe spec. When working with piping in a piping model, the pipe spec provides the material, rating, and connection details.

With the project joint settings, the pipe spec determines which fittings and fasteners are used when connecting and routing pipe. For example, it specifies the socket weld fittings for pipe under 3". Each pipe segment and fitting in the model originates from a pipe spec, except for custom parts.

Use a Spec in a Piping Model

After creating a spec, copy it to the project from Project Manager and use it to route pipe or place piping components in piping models. No additional configuration is required.

Before routing pipe, select a pipe spec. Use the Spec Viewer to view a spec sheet and place items from a spec sheet into a piping model. Alternatively, create a custom tool palette from a spec to simplify the process of placing parts in the piping model.

Update a Spec in a Piping Model

You can configure spec update options to automatically check for changes and prompt you to update the spec and model when changes are detected. You can select the specific parts or properties to update and set the interval for automatic updates.
