Deep beam - load applied to the lower part

To ensure adequate transfer of loads to the upper part of the deep beam, apply additional vertical reinforcement of the deep beam.

If Pi refers to the value of the suspended load, the cross-section of the additional reinforcement per length unit equals

  • If h ≤ l then the entire reinforcement Avi is to reach the upper surface of the deep beam.
  • If h > l then a half of Avi is to reach the height of l, and the remaining part is to reach the level of 1.5*l.

Symbols:

Vous = 0.5*Ps*l - Shear force (ULS) originating in the operation of the load applied in the upper part of the deep beam

Voui = 0.5*Pi*l - Shear force (ULS) originating in the operation of the load applied in the lower part of the deep beam

For horizontal reinforcement, the tangential stress that influences the amount of the calculated reinforcement equals

k = 2 - z/h.
