Turning Groove Roughing strategy

The Turning Groove Roughing strategy removes the bulk of stock from grooves by machining the inside diameter, the outside diameter, or the face of grooves.

Tool entry

The Tool Entry option enables you to choose whether the tool enters the groove from the side or from the center:

  • Side provides control over material removal while reducing the risk of tool breakage. It is useful for complex groove geometries or when there is limited space for the tool's entry.
  • Center helps remove large amounts of stock quickly, although it can result in higher cutting forces and tool deflection.

Specifying the order of cuts

If the tool enters the groove from the side, you can specify the Order of cuts. Choose to remove depth first or width first:

  • Depth First cuts the full depth of the groove before stepping over for the next cut.
  • Width First takes a small depth cut and then steps over to do the same for the entire width of the groove before moving onto the next stepdown.
