Acquire Coordinates for Advanced Geolocation

When detailed survey data is available, use advanced geolocation for Forma workflows, providing greater accuracy for coordination and analysis.

Note: As a Forma Connected Client, Revit offers Forma capabilities that are part of a technology preview (tech preview), which means that it's new and continuously improving. Learn more.

Geolocation is required when connecting the Revit model to a scenario. You can use advanced geolocation before connecting to a scenario. If you used a draft geolocation when connecting to a scenario, you can replace it with advanced geolocation later when survey data becomes available.

Upgrading from a prior release: If your Revit model was upgraded from 2026 or a prior release to the current release and it had acquired coordinates from a DWG file or another Revit model, the upgrade process uses that location information for advanced geolocation. You do not need to take steps to define advanced geolocation for the model. Check the geolocation information to confirm.

For advanced geolocation, acquire coordinates from a linked DWG file or another Revit model that is geolocated.

To acquire coordinates for advanced geolocation

  1. (Optional) Reset shared coordinates.

This step is recommended if the current model shares coordinates with other models. It moves the survey point back to the internal origin, effectively removing all geolocation information from the model.

  2. Link the file from which you want to acquire coordinates.

The link can be a DWG file, or a Revit model that has already acquired coordinates for advanced geolocation.

  3. Click Manage tab > Project Location panel > Coordinates drop-down > (Acquire Coordinates).
  4. Place the cursor on a link, and click.

The Revit model now uses advanced geolocation for Forma tools.

  5. (Optional) To confirm the geolocation defined for the model, click Manage tab > Project Location panel > (Location).

The Location tab on the Location and Site dialog displays details of the geolocation currently assigned to the model.

Note: For advanced geolocation from a DWG file, Revit does not read the elevation, the scale factor, nor the rotation angle to North.
