About Importing Data

Note: By default, InfraWorks converts incoming file formats into a usable format through the cloud. You can set Data Import options to use local import for supported formats.

Import

Import data from file-based or database sources through the Data Sources panel. You can create the base model data and then import the various types of data objects to complete your model. Alternatively, you can use the Model Builder to create your base model, then bring additional data sources into the model.

Note: You can also use the Autodesk Connector for ArcGIS to add ESRI ArcGIS feature data to your model.
Warning: File-based data or data sources must not be saved or manually placed into the InfraWorks model folders. This can lead to model corruption or loss of data. Data sources and other custom files should be stored outside of the InfraWorks model folders. For cloud projects, data sources should be placed on either BIM 360 Docs or Autodesk Docs.

Map Properties - Configure Data

The most important part of the import process is to map original properties of source data to the properties specified in the model. The more fields you can map your data to, the more accurate your model will be.

Different data types have different model property fields to which to map original source data properties. See To configure data for more information.

  • Use expressions as needed. For example, the model has a building property called ROOF_HEIGHT. Your building data may not have a property that directly matches this. Instead, create an expression to accurately measure roof height by multiplying the number of floors by the floor height.
  • Use scripts during import as needed.
  • Specify a Rule Style to create a default visual style for imported data features or to stylize imported data features using that data source's properties.
  • Define Style Rules to stylize individual features and subsets.
